As regards permanent houses, the State Government have appointed a
high level team consisting of Heads of Departments of State PWD, CPWD,
KSHB, KESNIK, District Collectors of Kollam, Allappuzah and Ernakulam
etc. in order to evolve a suitable design for the construction of permanent
houses in the Disaster Zone as well as Safe Zone.
Accordingly, the high level team met, discussed the matters in detail
and decided to take the help of IIT, Chennai to evolve suitable designs
for Disaster Resistant Houses and Normal houses. Accordingly, a team
of experts from IIT, Chennai have inspected the disaster affected areas
of Kerala State, analyzed the pattern of damages suffered by the Tsunami
affected houses, conducted soil testing in Alappuzha district and finally
suggested designs for both Disaster Resistant Houses and Normal Houses.
The high level team has studied the said designs, effected modifications
and submitted the same to the State Government. The said designs were
approved by the State Government and were passed on to the district
administration for starting the construction work.
The general features of the said houses are as follows: Each house will
have a plinth area of 430 Sq.Ft. with two bed rooms, a small hall, an
open verandah, a kitchen, a toilet cum bathroom and a stair case. The
house will have water and electric connections. However, subsequently
there was a demand from various quarters that the houses to be constructed
in the Disaster Zone should also have a first floor. Government have
